In the summer of 2012, Extraordinary Ventures started the Spectrum Skills Basketball Camp and I was lucky enough to join the other volunteers who worked with camp that first year. While I was somewhat reluctant to volunteer an entire week of my summer, my husband encouraged me to do so, and I couldn’t be more glad that I did. The week was incredible and so eye-opening. I had so much fun and learned so much from the campers, the other volunteers, and the Extraordinary Ventures staff. I was also amazed at the support that local businesses showed, and I started to realize just how special and important Extraordinary Ventures is to our community. While not every participant walked away from camp with a perfect jump shot, all of our campers had a renewed sense of self worth and belonging.

Since then, I have been a part of every EV basketball camp in some way or other, and it remains my favorite week of the year. I started directing camp in 2013 and I cannot say enough about the team of volunteers that helps make camp a success. Our driving force is our campers, and we start working in the winter to plan an outstanding camp to ensure that these amazing individuals have the best week of their year. I am a schoolteacher by trade and I have recruited numerous faculty members and former students to volunteer at camp and they return year after year. Their enthusiasm is contagious and always serves as a reminder of why we do what we do.

Extraordinary Ventures is a special place and I couldn’t be more proud to be apart of this wonderful organization. I tell any and everyone that I can about Extraordinary Ventures and hope to be around, supporting them and watching them grow for another 10 years!
